The crown of thorns (loyalty)
“…and plaiting a crown of thorns they put it on his head…” (RSV, Matthew 27:29)
A crown of thorns! Who would have thought on that Good Friday morning that the crown woven by a soldier as a piece of barrack room horseplay would express for ever after the true Kingship of God the Son! If they had placed upon his head a flashy imitation of the crown of an earthly king, how false it would have been!
His hands (generosity)
“They pierced my hands…” (King James Bible, Psalm 22:16)
Those pierced hands are the surest token of the wonderful generosity of our Saviour and our God. For they are the hands of the Giver of all good things, and how much had they already given! Innumerable were the times when he had been asked to lay those same hands on people who were sick or afflicted, and to give to them new health and strength – and never was he asked in vain.
His feet (obedience)
“They pierced my hands and my feet…” (King James Bible, Psalm 22:16)
And so, with Our Lord’s feet nailed to the Cross, his earthly journey reached its end. It can truly be said that every step of his life, from the time he first learnt to walk as a child refugee in Egypt, had been leading surely and purposefully to that Cross on which his feet were now at last nailed together.
