Short Talks
This section of the website comprises short stand-alone talks and articles on different aspects of the Christian Faith, including the teaching of Jesus, the seasons of the Church’s Year and Feasts and Festivals. More talks/sermons/homilies/articles will be added in due course.
The section of the website entitled The Christian Faith provides more extended teaching on larger content areas, such as the Creed and the Sacraments.
Worship, not speculation
With one exception all the Church’s festivals are concerned with God’s activity in human affairs in general and in the lives of individual people in particular. Obvious examples are Christmas, Easter, Ascension Day and Pentecost; and the various days in honour of Our Lady and the Apostles and Martyrs and all the other heroic witnesses to God and his truth.
The work of the Holy Spirit
“Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy Name give the praise…” (King James Bible, Psalm 115:1)
The spread of the Christian Faith in the times of the Apostles was unparalleled both in its speed and extent. It began with 12 men – as many as you could squeeze into a small room – but as a result of their efforts and achievements Christ was known and worshipped within 30 or 40 years, in centres of varying size from Spain to India.
His service is perfect freedom
“If we suffer, we shall also reign with him…” (King James Bible, 2 Timothy 2:12)
On Ascension Day, when Our Blessed Lord returned to Heaven, he led his Apostles out of Jerusalem, over the brook Kedron and up the Mount of Olives, passing on the way the Garden of Gethsemane where he had waited for his enemies six weeks before.
What greater contrast could there be than between these two scenes, between the Agony in the Garden and the Ascension, the one at the darkest hour before the dawn, the other in the full splendour of day.
