Ascension Day - Ascension Day

For 40 days after his Resurrection – the Great Forty Days – Jesus appeared to his Apostles.  He talked with them and ate with them, and gave them the sure conviction that he was indeed raised from the dead and alive for evermore.

On the 40th day, Jesus made his final appearance to his Apostles.  In order to help them understand that they would see him no more, he took leave of them in a very different way (see Luke 24:44-53; Acts 1:1-11).

So on Ascension Day we joyfully celebrate the return of the Risen Christ to the glory of Heaven, in the sure knowledge that he is with us always, to the end of time (Matthew 28:20).  The liturgical colour is white or gold.  After the Gospel, the Paschal Candle (which represents Our Risen Lord shining in the light and splendour of his Resurrection), is extinguished to remind us of his return to the joy and glory of Heaven.
