The section entitled Short Talks comprises stand-alone talks and articles on different aspects of the Christian Faith, including the teaching of Jesus, the seasons of the Church’s Year and Feasts and Festivals.·
The exiles of Israel and Judah
When Solomon died, his kingdom was split into two parts, Israel in the north and Judah in the south, each with a king of its own (see map).
The Roman Empire
After their return from Babylon to Jerusalem, the history of the Jews for the next 400 years was troubled by wars. Then, about 60 years before Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the Romans, who came from Italy, conquered Palestine. The Roman Empire was the greatest there had ever been, stretching as it did from the English Channel to North Africa and from Spain to Palestine itself.

Many years ago in the town of Nazareth in the north of Palestine there lived a young Jewish girl, the best and purest there could ever be. Her parents’ names were Joachim and Anne (the same St Anne who is in our Prayer Book Calendar and Common Worship Lectionary against July 26th), and her name was Mary.
