The section entitled Short Talks comprises stand-alone talks and articles on different aspects of the Christian Faith, including the teaching of Jesus, the seasons of the Church’s Year and Feasts and Festivals.· 

 

Thy will be done

God’s will

Today we come to the words in the Lord’s Prayer, “Thy will be done”.  God’s will means what God wishes should happen.  Everything that God wishes is good.  It always has and it always will be.  For goodness streams from God like the light streams from the sun.  It is only the Devil and human beings who wish to do what is evil and wrong.  The evil in the world, the hatred and the anger and the violence which cause so much suffering, all that is caused by the people whom God has made, not by God himself.

Our daily bread

Our daily bread

People sometimes wonder why in the Lord’s Prayer we should ask God to give us our daily bread when we get our bread from bakers.  But, of course, bakers don’t produce their loaves of bread by waving a magic wand over their ovens and saying abracadabra.  They make the bread from flour, and the flour comes from wheat and the wheat is sown by farmers.  But it is God who gives life to the seed in the first place and who gives the sunshine and rain to make it grow.  And God is the giver of all our food.

Our trespasses

Trespasses

You may have seen at a level-crossing gate a notice saying, “Trespassers will be prosecuted” or “No trespassers”.  To trespass means to go where you ought not to go, and there are two reasons why trespassers must keep off railway lines.  First, they might cause an accident to a train; and secondly, they might get injured or even killed themselves.
