The worldwide Church
Into all the world
You may have seen a picture of Jesus surrounded by children from different countries. This is a way of showing that the Christian Church is open for people of all nations to join, for the simple reason that Jesus came to save all people. That is why, before he ascended to Heaven, he commanded his Apostles to go and teach all nations and baptise them (Matthew 28:19).
The Church, the Society of God
Societies
Some of you may have attended a Christingle service and given money to the Children’s Society which works to help children going through difficult times. You’ll have heard of other societies which work to relieve the suffering of animals, such as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA). But the biggest society the world has ever known is the Church.
The Church Militant
We know that Jesus is King of kings and Lord of lords, but that does not mean that all his enemies are completely beaten. You will remember that when the Devil, the Spirit and Lord of Evil, found there was no place for him in Heaven, he came to this world to make it his kingdom. Ever since then he has been fighting against God, and although he knows he cannot win, yet he will fight on to the end. His plan is to get us to obey him and to separate us from God. There is not a single person who can face the Devil alone and beat him.
